Cartagena de Indias is becoming one of Colombia's city with highest growth potential, due to the paradigm shift towards globalization and the momentum the country is going through.

Its worldwide recognition as an international tourism destination has strengthened with the arrival of great hotel chains such as Sheraton, Hyatt, Intercontinental and Holiday, among others, increasing capacity of available beds in order to host the growing number of visitors looking for experiencing the magic of its old city and nightlife.

Growth in leisure tourism is growing is growing at the same pace as tourism for conventions and congresses, a product currently ranking Cartagena as 59th among more than 300 cities from around the world as a destination for this type of events, benefiting from a niche segment prone to contributing with city's development.

Bolívar's industrial sector, the 5th largest nationwide, harbours many of the most important local and foreign companies from the oil and plastics industry.  Additionally, the expansion project of Cartagena's oil refinery, the largest investment project in the country, offers multiple business opportunities as well as laying the groundwork for future industrial projects of expansion and relocation of more businesses in Bolívar Department.

Cartagena and Bolívar's strategic location, on Colombia's northern Caribbean coast, provides communication and access to the main markets in the world. Only 5 days from the United States' east coast and less than a day by boat from the Panama Canal, Cartagena is located across the region with highest maritime traffic in the Greater Caribbean. Thanks to this location, Colombia's foreign trade moves most of its cargo through Port of Cartagena's container terminal; 70% of all containers entering or exiting Colombia do it through Cartagena. In order to leverage this foreign trade logistics potential, the city has developed 4 permanent tax free zones, industrial parks, warehouses and storage facilities, and other projects which facilitate the import, export and sales processes for businesses.

This location has also allowed the development of a boat design and repair sector, where vessels crossing the Caribbean may carry out their maintenance operations more efficiently.
  • Cartagena de Indias is the most internationally renowned tourism destination in Colombia; its historic depth, culture and the warmth of its people attract thousands of international tourists and events every year, which has lead to the development of projects by the main hotel chains from around the world.
  • The industrial production of Cartagena and Bolívar is the 5th largest in Colombia. The main companies from the petrochemical-plastic sector have located their production plants in the city, which is also hosting Colombia’s biggest industrial investment project, the expansion of Cartagena’s oil refinery valued at USD 4,500 million.
  • 70% of all import/export container cargo into and out from Colombia passes through the ports of Cartagena, making it Colombia’s foreign trade gateway. The development of terminals, the creation of tax-free zones and industrial parks are transforming the city into an international logistics centre.
  • Cartagena’s strategic location, in the northern corner of South America, places it on the route of vessels transiting the Caribbean. Less than a day by boat from the Panama Canal and very close from the east coast of the United State, Cartagena’s connectivity to the world is one of its most valuable attributes.
